それが鏡のような水面に映っているのもまた素晴らしい

澄み切った水底に沈んでいる石までも藤色の宝石のように輝いていることよ

Beautiful wisteria flowers with clusters of flowers swaying in the wind.

The reflection of the flowers on the mirror-like surface of the water is also wonderful.

Even the stones sunk at the bottom of the clear water are shining like wisteria-colored jewels.

On April 12, 750, Iemochi and a group of like-minded friends played on the waters of Nunose (located in Himi City, Toyama Prefecture), each admiring wisteria flowers and composing poems.

They must have been relaxing on a boat floating on the calm waters of the sea, where there were no waves to reflect the wisteria flowers. When they looked into the water, they saw a beautiful jewel. Iemochi must have thought the crystal clear water was wonderful and composed this poem.

Although it is not known how large the Nuse-no-Mizukai was in present-day Himi City, a monument inscribed with this poem stands in the precincts of the Takonoura Fujinami Shrine in Shimotako, Himi City (Hideo Shintani, chief curator at the Takaoka City Complex of Manyo History).
