〔訳〕広大な天の海。底に浮かぶ雲は、立つ白波だ。

月の船がそこを渡って、星の林に隠れてゆく。

「天」を「海」、「雲」を「波」、「月」を「船」、「星」を「林」に見立てて詠んだ壮大な一首です。

※柿本人麻呂　（生没年不詳）

万葉歌人。持統（じとう）・文武（もんむ）両天皇に仕えた宮廷歌人と

いう。雄大荘重な長歌の形式を完成する一方、短歌においても抒情詩人

として高い成熟度を示し、万葉歌人の中の第一人者とされる。

後世、歌聖と仰がれた 。｢柿本人麻呂歌集｣がある。

The vast sea of heaven. The clouds at the bottom are white waves.

The moon's boat crosses it and hides in the forest of stars.

In this magnificent poem, "heaven" is the "sea," "clouds" are the "waves," "moon" is the "ship," and "stars" are the "forest.

*Kakimoto no Hitomaro (Date of birth and death unknown)

Kakimoto no Hitomaro was a Man'yo poet. He is said to have been a court poet who served the Jito and Monmu Emperors.

Kakimoto no Maro is said to have been a court poet. While he perfected the grand and solemn form of long poems, he also showed a high level of maturity as a lyric poet in tanka poetry.
